Dhaka : Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Thursday opened the Nazrul Complex beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque to mark the 33rd death anniversary of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Nazrul, called “national poet” in Bangladesh, is popularly referred to as “Bidrohi Kabi” (rebel poet).
Through his powerful poems, he inspired generations of people to fight against bondage and injustice during the British colonial rule.
Nazrul’s songs and poems were also a source of inspiration for the freedom fighters during the country’s liberation war in 1971, Star Online said. The poet, who had spent better part of his life in Kolkata, moved to Dhaka in his last days, where he passed away at the age of 77.
