Six months after Beemapalli police firing: judicial probe not yet started

By TwoCircles.net Staff Correspondent,

Kochi: Six months have passed since the government announced judicial probe into the Beemapalli police firing incident, but the judicial probe has not yet begun. It is said that the reason for delay is the government indifference towards the demands put forward by Thiruvananthapuram district judge K Ramakrishnan who is in charge of the judicial probe. The investigation of the Crime Branch too has reached nowhere, reportedly.

The police firing in Beemapalli took place on May 17, killing six innocent people. The failure of the police in controlling the problem that arose on May 16 led to the firing on the next day. The judicial probe was announced by Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in the all-party meeting held at the Collectorate the next day. The same was repeated by Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan also. The government tried to get a sitting judge in the High Court for the probe but couldn’t. The High Court then gave permission for Judge K Ramakrishnan of the Thiruvananthapuram District Court.

Even though it has been months since the formation of the commission, no measures have yet been reportedly taken for its functioning. The hesitation of the government to provide the necessary facilities is reportedly said as the reason for this delay. It is said that the district Collector had not yet replied to the report submitted by the Judge regarding the necessary facilities for the probe. The commission had reportedly asked the government to provide an able secretary as the matter was a serious one. The commission had also reportedly suggested the name of a person who had retired from service for the same. Other demands were regarding the number of employees and opening an office in the court premises. A final picture has also not been given for the subjects of consideration that come under the commission, reportedly.
