Bangalore: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader M. Venkaiah Naidu Saturday said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had handled the Telangana issue in an “immature and irresponsible” manner.
“They have messed up the issue. It is an immature and irresponsible act of the government,” Naidu, who hails from Andhra Pradesh but is a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka, told reporters here.
He said it was clear the UPA did not consult its legislators and parliament members or even the Andhra Pradesh chief minister on the issue. “It should have been careful as regional feelings are involved,” he added.
Andhra Pradesh has been in turmoil following the UPA government’s announcment that steps would be initiated to divide the state to form Telanganae. Andhra and Rayalaseema, the two other regions making up Andhra Pradesh, are up in arms over the move.
In a related development, union Law Minister M.Veerappa Moily said there was nothing new in the demand from other regions of the country for new states following the decision to create Telangana.
“These demands are not new,” he told reporters on the margins of a function here referring to Gorkhaland, the trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh, Vidharba and other such demands.
Moily sought cooperation of the states and political parties to resolve the demand for new states.
