The legislators from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, headed by former minister J.C. Diwakar Reddy and including those from the ruling Congress, submitted a memorandum to the governor, requesting him to intervene to prevent division of the state.

The legislators told Tiwari that 138 members of the assembly and 40 members of the council, cutting across party lines, had submitted their resignations to protest the central government’s decision to initiate the process for formation of a separate Telangana state.

Meanwhile, assembly Speaker Kirankumar Reddy held a meeting with the state advocate general and legal experts to discuss the issue of mass resignations of the legislators.

Earlier, legislators of the main opposition Telugu Desam Party met the speaker and urged him to accept their resignations. The speaker said he would take a decision after consulting constitutional experts.
