Ghaziabad: An 18-year-old girl student of a dental college in Ghaziabad attempted suicide by hanging herself allegedly because of her poor academic performance, family said.
Shivani Sharma, a first year Bachelor of Dental Studies student of ITS Dental College in Murad Nagar, attempted to take her own life in her hostel room 5.30 p.m. Tuesday.
Shivani is now struggling for life at Sarvodaya Hospital in Kavi Nagar and is on life-support system.
The girl’s family said she was under extreme pressure to do well in her studies. On Monday, Shivani had appeared for some exam and had called up her mother in the evening to say she did not do well.
“She was admitted in a state of neck compression. Her throat area was swollen and her nervous system was also paralysed. She is on ventilator and is being kept on sedation,” a doctor at Sarvaodaya Hospital said.
Ramesh Sharma, the girl’s father, said, “On Tuesday around 5.35 p.m., I got information from college that she had hanged herself in her room. Since then we have not been able to talk to her over what happened exactly.”
When asked to comment, Vijay Sharma, administrator at the ITS Dental College, said: “The girl attempted suicide. She is out of danger. We would get the exact picture only when she speaks. We are waiting for her version. We have intimated the police.”
A police official at Murad Nagar police station said, ” We have not received any kind of oral or written complaint so far from the college in this matter.”
