New Delhi: Maharashtra trounced Manipur 36-0 to emerge champions in the All India Inter-State under-16 Rugby sevens tournament here Sunday.
Runners-up Manipur surprised everyone by putting in spirited efforts and reaching the finals.
Earlier in the day, the semi-final matches saw Bengal, one of the title favourites, going down to Manipur 0-12. In the other semifinal, Maharashtra defeated Orissa 5-0.
The Plate finals were won by Assam who beat Haryana 10-5 and the Bowl finals were won by Goa who beat Chhattisgarh 10-0. The Shield finals were won by Karnataka who beat Rajasthan 24-0.
The president of Rugby India Pramod Khanna said: “The energy levels of our boys have been commendable today. We are planning more such events before the Commonmwealth Games to boost up the sport of Rugby throughout the country.”
