Congress honours freedom fighters on its foundation day

Lucknow : Nearly 200 freedom fighters were honoured Tuesday by the Congress’ Uttar Pradesh unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi to mark the 125th anniversary of the party’s foundation.

Joshi presented shawls to the freedom fighters and eulogised their contribution to the freedom movement at a function at the party’s headquarters here.

“We dedicate this day to all those who fought relentlessly for the nation’s independence, undaunted by the odds,” she said.

“What our veteran Congressmen did to fight the British was unparalleled… they faced hardships and withstood all kinds of physical and mental torture but refused to bow down before the rulers, who they eventually succeeded in overthrowing,” she said.

Hitting out at the British for playing their “divide and rule’ card to rule over Indians, the Congress leader also sought to alert the people against “similar divisive forces that are trying to forge a communal divide in society today”.
