The tourist was apparently lost in admiring the 17th century marble wonder while taking photographs.

“But she lost her balance and fell off the low wall (around the monument) onto the red sandstone Chameli Farsh, a good 20 feet below,” a security personnel said.

Her husband and security personnel immediately took her to a nearby nursing home from where she was referred to a Delhi hospital.

According to guides at the Taj, she had serious injuries to her spine and legs due to the fall.

Meanwhile, there has been an unprecedented rush of holiday makers in the past three days to the Taj.

Ticket sales in three days crossed 90,000, mostly of domestic tourist, according to Sandeep Arora, former president of the Agra Hotels and Restaurants Association.

Long queues of visitors at all the three gates had increased the pressure on the security personnel guarding the gates and frisking tourists, at times leading to heated arguments.
