Constituent Assembly member Ranbir Singh cremated

Rohtak (Haryana) : The body of Ranbir Singh, the last surviving member of India’s Constituent Assembly, were consigned to flames here Monday with full state honours.

Ranbir Singh, 94, passed away Sunday. He was the father of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

A freedom fighter, parliamentarian and administrator, Ranbir Singh was known in this area of Haryana for taking up the cause of poor and backward people and peasants. He actively participated in the freedom struggle, and was jailed several times.

Thousands of people and political leaders, cutting across party lines, gathered at the “Samvidhan Sthal” here for his last rites.

His funeral pyre was lit by his elder son Inder Singh Hooda.

The state government announced that a national memorial would be raised at the “Samvidhan Sthal” to inspire youth and future generations about the freedom struggle of the country and sacrifices of freedom fighters.

It will have photographs of all members of the Constituent Assembly and apprise the visitors with the history of the country’s freedom struggle.
