New Delhi : A day after owning “moral responsibility” for the 1992 Babri masjid demolition, rebel Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh Thursday said he owned “total responsibility” for the incident that triggered massive sectarian riots in the country and its bitter memories continue to fester.

“I want to state that the incident that took place on December 6, 1992, in Ayodhya, I own total responsibility for it. I had even resigned from the chief minister post on the same day,” Kalyan told reporters after his meeting with Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and party general secretary Amar Singh here.

Kalyan also pledged that he would work to ensure the defeat and destruction of the BJP.

“I will leave no stone unturned to defeat the BJP. I will work for the complete destruction of the BJP and stop all possibilities of the formation of a BJP-led government at the centre,” he said.

Rebuffing the argument that there was resentment in the minority community against his friendship with Mulayam Singh Yadav, he said: “The ordinary Muslim has welcomed and is happy about my friendship with Mulayam. Muslims do not want the BJP and neither do I, so where is the conflict.”

Kalyan Singh said that he wanted to give his full support and contribution to the Samajwadi Party so that the party can win substantial seats in the Lok Sabha elections and form government in Uttar Pradesh after the next assembly elections in order to “free the state from terrorism of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)”.

“I will make my full contribution to help Samajwadi Party win as many seats as possible in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. I will also work for the formation of a Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh in the next Vidhan Sabha elections.

“My objective is to free Uttar Pradesh from the state-sponsored terrorism of BSP as it has a lot of mafias in its fold,” he said.
