“The incident was brought to my notice by my wife. As there was nothing to be alarmed about, I have advised party workers and political allies to remain calm and desist from any provocative act,” Pandian, who is in Dharmapuri – 350 km west of here – on party work, told IANS over the phone.

“Police officials visited the spot and the fire services personnel doused the flames which had reduced the vehicles to cinders,” he added.

A demonstration was scheduled to be held in the city later in the day to protest the arson, CPI sources said.

CPI is one of the constituents of the Lankan Tamils’ Protection Movement that is pressing for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka to protect the lives of innocent Tamil civilians caught in the war-torn northern region of the country.

A car belonging to Tamil movie director Seeman, who is supporting the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), was set on fire on Dec 19 in the southwest suburbs here in a similar manner.

Police officials said investigations into both the incidents are underway.
