‘Wen’ shoe protester is pathology student: report

By IANS,

London : The Cambridge University protester who caused an international stir by throwing a shoe at visiting Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao is a German pathology student, the Daily Telegraph reported. Quoting unnamed sources, the paper identified the shoe thrower as 27-year-old Martin Jahnke, a senior postgraduate member of the pathology department who has tutored undergraduates and presented lunchtime seminars.

Wen was 40 minutes into his speech on See China in the Light of Her Development’ Monday when Jahnke stood up and shouted: “How can the university prostitute itself with this dictator here? How can you listen to the lies he’s telling?”

However, his shoe narrowly missed its target.

Wen described the protest as “despicable” and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown expressed his personal regret to Wen in a letter.

The Cambridge University, which attracts more than 600 Chinese students a year, has apologised and said it is taking the matter “very, very seriously.”

Jahnke was reported to be carrying out important genetic research into debilitating diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis and arthritis.
