KABUL : A militant commander was killed and four others were arrested in southern Afghanistan by the Afghan police, with the assistance of the US-led coalition troops.
A military statement said the militant leader was killed in Washir district of the country’s Helmand on Saturday.
The troops were conducting a search operation on a suspected mid-level Taliban commander’s compound, the statement noted.
As the combined force approached the compound, the suspect exited and took up a fighting position in a nearby valley, engaging the troops with small-arms fire, it added.
The force then responded and killed the militant. The slain militant was suspected of being a key mid-level Taliban commander responsible for several attacks against Afghan forces. (end) gk.hb KUNA 091453 Feb 09NNNN
