“The track record of the Congress-led government shows that we have never used the CBI for any kind of political gains. The CBI is acting on the orders of the court, not ours,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters.

Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh Tuesday criticised the CBI and said its report to the Supreme Court in a disproportionate assets case filed against Mulayam Singh had “288 mistakes”.

He also said the probe agency was acting at the behest of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government.

Singh told reporters here: “The CBI’s status report to the Supreme Court in the case has 288 mistakes. Not one, two or three, it has 288 mistakes.”

On the other hand, the BJP charged the Congress with using the CBI to get a favourable report for Mulayam Singh in exchange for supporting the government during the trust vote last year.

BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley Tuesday said: “The Congress is using and abusing the CBI for political ends. The Samajwadi Party supported the Congress to procure a favourable report for Mulayam Singh Yadav,” Jaitley told reporters.

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh countered the allegations, saying: “The Congress has never intervened in the functioning of the CBI.”
