New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia will host a UGC workshop on Capacity Building for Women Managers in Higher Education from February 17-20 at its campus.
The University Grants Commission has been emphasising gender equity and inclusion in higher education policies and curricula, and this is clearly articulated in the XIth Plan of the UGC. To achieve this objective, UGC wants to increase the number of women in decision-making positions in higher education and develop a gender friendly environment.
The scheme invites universities to nominate women holding middle level and higher positions to undergo the training, which extends from five days. In due course, it also identifies some of them as trainers and provides a special skills training workshop to take on the role of coordinators and trainers, so that, they can undertake the responsibility for organising these workshops in their respective institutions.
JMI has deputed participants for both the workshops. The nominated women academicians or administrators can come from any stream including arts, medicine, technology, agriculture, fisheries, pharmacy, architecture, science, commerce, and all other disciplines in academic institutions. Duty leave is extended for their attendance and the UGC bears all the expenditure as per their approved budget.
It is common knowledge that there are not as many women as men at decision making levels in any field, though women have shown that they are equally gifted, talented and competent in scholarship, leadership, management and policy making.
Starting in the year 2002-2003, workshops (with about 30 participants each) are being held for five days in different universities and colleges of the country sensitising, creating awareness and building motivation, for women teachers in higher education .The participants constitute middle and senior level women in administrative positions or who have the potential to occupy such positions in the near future.
