New Delhi : Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh has said he is “pressurising” the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) not to frame his party’s chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in a corruption case pending before the Supreme Court.
In an interview telecast on news channel IBN7 Sunday evening, Amar Singh said, “My pressure is on the CBI, not the Congress” and added that he trusted the judiciary more than the agency.
A public interest litigation filed in the apex court in November 2005 accused Yadav of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income and sought an inquiry against him.
“The status report in the case filed by the CBI contained 288 mistakes,” Amar Singh said, and expressed surprise at the agency’s statement now that the document had not been produced in the apex court at all.
He was referring to the CBI report which was allegedly leaked to a section of the media earlier last week.
Amar Singh said: “I am challenging CBI director Ashwani Kumar, if this status report is wrong. Our Law Minister (H.R.) Bhardwaj said that this is not submitted in the court. I want to say through your channel that Hansraj Bhardwaj had misled Soniaji (Congress president Sonia Gandhi) on Oct 26, 2007.”
“Now that status report is in the Supreme Court in a sealed envelope and some journalists also have this report (with them). Both reports are same and that report has 288 mistakes,” he said.
Asked if he was arm-twisting the Congress-led government, seeking return for supporting it in the July 2008 trust vote, Amar Singh said: “No, not Congress, my pressure is on the CBI.”
Asked why he feared Mulayam Singh Yadav would go to jail and if he did not trust the CBI, Amar Singh said: “I trust the judiciary.”
Commenting on his relationship with the Congress, which he had last week accused of using the CBI against Yadav, he said: “I have no enmity with anyone in politics and my relationship with the Congress has always been of cooperation.”
