Islamabad : Suspected US drone fired missiles on a training camp of Taliban militants in a Pakistani tribal region on Monday, killing around 30 people, witnesses and official sources said.
Four missiles struck the suspected training camps in Kurrum agency, where Afghan and Pakistani Taliban were staying, sources said.
Geo television quoted sources as putting the death toll from the strike at 30.
Sources said that four missiles struck the training camp of an Afghan commander Behram Khan at Sur Pul area in Kurrum Agency at 10 am.
The camp is located in Pakistani area and is at the distance of 15 kilometers from Afghanistan’s eastern Khost province.
Sources said that Afghan Taliban were receiving training for their operations in Afghanistan. The camp was run by Maulana Muhammad Amin and Maulana Sadar. Some 40 militants were staying at the camp when struck by missiles.
According to locals, the camp was set up during the Afghan ‘Jehad’ (1979-89) to train Mujahideen against the former Soviet Union, but the camp was still functioning.
It is the first US strike on the suspected Taliban hideouts in Kurrum tribal agency.
The US drone aircraft have carried out strikes on four tribal regions out of the total seven tribal areas, known as FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Area).
Pakistan was expecting the new US administration to halt drone attacks but there is no change in the policy.
