Islamabad : Pakistan’s major Islamic party has asked the government to clarify its position on drone attacks on the country’s tribal regions after a US senator said that drones are using a Pakistani base for strikes.
The Chairperson of the US Intelligence Committee, Senator Dianne Feinstein had said that the Drones were being flown out of Pakistani Base.
“This disclosure has shocked every Pakistani and destroyed the credibility of the present Pakistani leadership,” Jamaat deputy chief Senator Prof. Khurshid Ahmad said.
He said the government has always denied the existence of any US military base in Pakistan but the disclosure by the US senator gives lie to all official Pakistani claims.
Criticism from Jamaat came hours after US drone fired two missiles on South Waziristan tribal region, killing around 30 persons.
“It is not possible that an American base on Pakistani soil can exist and operate without the knowledge and concurrence of the Pakistani government and army,” Khurshid said.
“It clearly shows that the present leadership has been deceiving its Parliament and people. There cannot be a crime greater than this”.
The Jamaat senator demanded that the government must be made accountable before the Parliament. “People of Pakistan have no option but to rise to safeguard their independence and sovereignty,” he said.
