Islamabad : Foreign investigation agencies will search for the missing UN official in Pakistan, IRNA reported Tuesday.
John Solecki, an American national and head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) here, was abducted by the militants after killing his driver near his office in Balochistan provincial capital of Quetta Feb 2.
The gunmen intercepted Solecki’s vehicle and shot dead his driver before kidnapping him.
A hitherto unknown group Baloch Liberation United Front claimed responsibility for the abduction. The group released a video showing Solecki Friday with a list of their demands. It also threatened to kill him if their demands were not met.
Solecki in the video urged the UN to make all efforts for his release. He was seen blind folded in the video.
“I have information that they (foreign agencies) have come here and staying in a local hotel,” Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani told reporters.
“I do not know whom they have met and what they are doing?” Raisani added.
“Balochistan government is making all-out efforts for safe release of John Solecki,” he said.
On Saturday, UN Secretary-General Ban ki-moon urged President Asif Ali Zardari to make all efforts for the release of Solecki. The UN has also sought direct access to the captors.
The abductors are demanding the release of their members in custody of the Pakistani government for Solecki’s release.
