New Delhi: India’s prestigious central university Jamia Millia Islamia has offered a post to Prof S Pannikar, the beleaguered Baroda-based university teacher. Prof S Pannikar was the acting Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Maharaja Siyajirao University in Baroda when he was embroiled in a controversy with militant Hindu right-wing activists and suspended.
Upon the proposal of Jamia Vice Chancellor Prof Mushirul Hasan, the Executive Council of Jamia Millia Islamia has offered the Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Chair to Prof S Pannikar. The Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Chair is a full Professorial Chair that rotates among different faculties. With the offer being made to Prof Pannikar, the Chair will be attached to the Faculty of Fine Arts in Jamia.
The Executive Council of the university has recently approved the appointment of three eminent scholars on three Professorial Chairs. All three appointments will be for a period of two years.
The two other appointments are of Sanjoy Hazarika for the Saifuddin Kitchlew Chair to be located in the MMAJ Academy of Third World Studies, and Dr Sujit Dutta for the M K Gandhi Chair to be located in the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace & Conflict Resolution. Sanjoy Hazarika has already joined the recently set up Centre for North-East Studies, located in the MMAJ Academy of Third World Studies as its Director.
The Saifuddin Kitchlew Chair has recently been created by the Centenary Committee chaired by Union Minister of Human Resource Development Arjun Singh.
Ambassador Veena Sikri has been offered the Ford Foundation Chair to launch a Bangladesh Programme at the MMAJ Academy of Third World Studies.
