The University of Calgary, which will host the Tibetan spiritual leader, has said in a statement that this will be the Dalai Lama’s first visit to the city in 30 years.

During his stay in Canada, the Nobel Peace Prize winner will be the keynote speaker for the ‘NOW’ series of three-day events from Sep 30 to Oct 2.

Under the ‘Connect Now’ event, the Dalai Lama will address people in “providing insight into how we can grow both as individuals and as a community. He will speak to the power of compassion and social responsibility”, a university statement said.

The same evening, the spiritual leader will also lead Canadian artists in the conference called ‘Listen NOW’.

“Inspired by His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s main commitments, the conference draws on compassion, connectedness and collaboration to explore the potential of campus-community partnerships,” the statement said.

Under the ‘Engage NOW’ conference, the Tibetan leader will lead a plenary session for engaging city authorities and educational institutions “towards the goal of developing mutually beneficial partnerships for service, research and community-based learning”.

The Dalai Lama will join the city in his last engagement called ‘Act NOW’ where thousands of people will take a vow to “be the change (they) wish to see in the world”.

There was no word about the Dalai Lama’s visit to any other city during his stay in Canada.

In a rare honour, the Canadian parliament had named the Tibetan spiritual leader an honorary citizen in 2006, sparking off protests by Beijing.

In 2007, the Dalai Lama was received by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, again leading to protests from China.
