Chandigarh : As part of its total sanitation campaign (TSC), 1.41 million (1,417,960) toilets have been built across villages in Haryana in less than four years in an effort to eliminate defecation in the open.
Riding high on generating awareness among masses about the sanitation campaign through radio jingles, hoardings on buses, posters and banners, the state government is aggressively attacking the root-cause of insanitation, a government spokesman said here Monday.
Among the many campaigns put in place, one reads: “Don’t get your daughter married into a household which doesn’t have a toilet.”
Out of the 1,417,960 toilets constructed from 2005 to Jan 31 this year, 947,828 units were built by families above the poverty line (APL) and 470,132 by those below (BPL).
The cost of each toilet unit, which is subsidised under a centre and state funded scheme of the TSC, has been revised from Rs.1,500 to Rs.2,500 per unit.
Under a scheme, 798 village panchayats have already received nearly Rs.112 million (Rs.11.29 crore) as reward for having a toilet in each household of the village.
