31st SAARC Foreign ministers meet begins in Sri Lanka Friday

New Delhi : The Foreign Ministers of South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Member States will meet in Colombo Friday for its 31st Inter-Summit Session.

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the current Chair of SAARC is to deliver the inaugural address of this two-day summit to be held at Ceylon Continental Hotel in national capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo.

Implementation of the 15th SAARC Summit Declaration as well as decisions taken at the 15th SAARC summit in Colombo last August in areas on economic and financial cooperation, operation of the SAARC Food Bank and the establishment of the new inter region bank among SAARC countries are the main topics of the summit.

All the eight foreign ministers of SAARC countries are to participate in the summit under the patronage of Sri Lanka Foreign minister Rohitha Bogollagama.

Meanwhile, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, E. Ahamed will represent India at the meeting in place of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Foreign minister Rohitha Bogollagama hopes to discuss matters related to the country’s current situation with his Indian counterpart during this summit.

Beside other issues, the Council of Ministers will discuss the SAARC draft declaration against terrorism.
