Kolkata : A West Bengal court Friday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for burning a woman to death a decade ago.
Rina Jaiswal, a resident of Golabari town of Howrah district, was burnt to death by her husband and in-laws for not fulfilling dowry demands.
The Howrah court Friday found Rina’s husband Deepak, her mother-in-law and three sisters-in-law guilty of murdering her and awarded them life terms.
Police sources said Rina was married to Deepak in 1997.
“At the time of marriage, Deepak was given Rs 51,000 cash and 20 grams of gold, along with other valuables like colour television, refrigerator and furniture,” the sources said.
“As per the FIR lodged at Golabari police station by Rina’s father after the incident, Deepak and her in-laws were pressurising her for a motorcycle. When she refused to ask her father for it, they set her ablaze in 1999,” the sources said.
