London : American golfer John Daly revealed that he has been suspended from the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour for six months for misdemeanor.
The ban is reportedly for the conduct that has brought unwelcome publicity to the tour, including an incident in Oct when he spent a night in jail in North Carolina sobering up after being taken into custody at a local Hooters restaurant.
Daly, 42, is a two-time major championship winner and was suspended from the tour once before in 1992-93. He has battled alcohol and weight problems throughout his career.
The night in jail after being found drunk outside a restaurant has apparently prompted PGA to ban him.
Daly said his suspension is “not fair in reality, but it’s probably fair in perception”.
The Tour, however, has not officially confirmed that Daly had been suspended although the player said Tour commissioner Tim Finchem sent a letter to his agent, Bud Martin.
“Tim and his staff have to do what they do,” Daly said. “Truly and honestly, I wish Tim would get to know the facts better before he makes a decision. I would love to sit down and have a nice talk with him, tell him what really happened. But perception is reality in the world, and sometimes they have to do what they have to do.”
Reputed for an amazing ability to hit the ball fairly long, Daly took advantage of a late call-up in 1991 to the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick in Indiana to win the title, the first of his two majors. His second major came at the 1995 Open at St Andrew’s in Scotland.
He has won three PGA events, the last coming in 2004 at the Buick Invitational in San Diego — a significant victory as it came when he was fighting to overcome alcoholism.
