Chandigarh : Dense fog and shivering cold continued to throw life out of gear in Punjab and Haryana as well as the union territory of Chandigarh Saturday.
The fog has brought visibility down to zero at nights and early mornings, disrupting road, rail and air traffic.
Although there was a slight increase in temperature Saturday, there was no respite from the fog.
The Saturday morning minimum temperature in Chandigarh was 6.8 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degrees more than Friday.
Amritsar once again was the coldest region in the north Indian plains with the morning minimum temperature at 1.8 degrees Celsius – lower than Shimla in Himachal Pradesh that recorded 5.7 degrees Celsius.
“One flight to Goa and one to Delhi were cancelled Friday due to foggy weather. Besides, many other flights were delayed – from between one to five hours,” said an official of Chandigarh airport.
Similar conditions prevailed at Rajasansi airport in Amritsar in Punjab, around 250 km from here, as many flights were cancelled or delayed.
Trains coming to Chandigarh were delayed by several hours and passengers had to wait in the cold railway station.
Motorists had a tough time driving to work due to dense fog, which claimed two lives Friday.
Parveen Kumar (42), a resident of Chandigarh, rammed his motorcycle into an electricity pole due to dense fog late Friday evening. He died on way to hospital. In another incident, Kamaljit Singh, 22, failed to see the divider and his tractor rammed against it and overturned. Kamaljit, a resident of Mohali around 10 km from here, died on the spot.
