China quake survivors get over $1 bn in government aid

Beijing : China Sunday said that more than 10.7 billion yuan (about $1.6 billion) in government aid were distributed to the survivors of the devastating May 12 earthquake last year.

The money was distributed from June to December last year in quake-hit provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi and Yunnan, the finance ministry said in a statement.

Officials said for around 8.9 million people, who lost their homes and livelihood, the standard aid was 10 yuan plus 500 gm of food daily.

The elderly people, orphans and the disabled with no living relatives, got 600 yuan every month.

The government also distributed 625 million yuan in special aid to keep the affected people warm during the winter.
