New Delhi : The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decision to part ways with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) will benefit the “anti-secular” National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Congress said Sunday.
“The PDP decision to withdraw support to the UPA will help and benefit the anti-secular front of the NDA,” Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad told IANS.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti Sunday wrote a letter to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi withdrawing the party support. Mehbooba said continuing ties had become “untenable”.
Ahmad said: “The PDP has taken the decision in haste after we decided to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir in alliance with National Conference. The PDP took the decision keeping regional politics in mind. As a secular party, PDP should have kept in mind that such a step might help divisive forces,” he said.
He said the PDP might join the third political front but steps taken in opposition to the UPA are bound to benefit NDA and “its divisive agenda”.
The PDP is the third regional party to withdraw its support to the ruling coalition in recent times. The TRS and the MDMK earlier withdrew support to the government.
