Sydney : South African batsman Jean-Paul Duminy’s sensational performance in the first two Tests against Australia made his mother fly to Sydney for the third Test.
Having watched on television her son take on the might of Australia in the series, Juanita Duminy could not resist herself from seeing her son play live.
“It has all happened so quickly,” Juanita was quoted as saying in The Age. “To be here and see J.P. in live action, has been very special.”
Duminy himself is yet to come in term with his recent success.
“It has been very exciting to have my mother here to share what has been a very special Christmas and New Year for me,” Duminy said.
In Perth, Duminy covered himself in glory, accepting a poor decision in his first Test innings with good grace when given out for one.
In the second, he wrote a place for himself in the record books, scoring an unbeaten 50 as South Africa’s 4-414 made history and asserted the visitors’ dominance.
In Melbourne, his tour ratcheted up another notch as he plundered 166 against a fading Australian attack and set up the platform for the series victory, a handsome knock made only more worthy by the fact the 24-year-old from Cape Town was playing his second match at this level.
When Graeme Smith, after more than a session of frustration with his attack was unable to shift pace bowler Mitchell Johnson or Michael Clarke, he tossed the No. 6 batsman the ball to chance his arm with off-spin.
Whether inspired captaincy or an act of desperation, the result was the same. With his second, looping full toss of the over, he enticed Clarke into error, with his mistimed drive on 138 directed straight back to the unbelieving bowler.
