New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Wednesday urged the central government to further reduce the price of diesel and take other immediate steps to end the truck operators’ strike, which the party said has “disrupted transport of supplies”.
The transporters are protesting the government reluctance so far to reduce the diesel price by “at least Rs.10 a litre” – as the truckers want – against the Rs.2 a litre now, and steep road taxes. They are also demanding a bail-out package for the sector.
The strike, which entered the third day Wednesday, has jacked up prices of essential commodities in some parts of the country.
Supporting the agitators’ demand for reduction of diesel prices, the CPI-M politburo in a statement said “this should be done.”
The Marxists urged the government to “immediately hold discussions with the representatives of the motor transport associations for the settlement of their other demands.”
