Chennai : Terrorism is a threat to India’s pluralistic traditions and the country will work with other countries to eliminate the “safe havens” and “launching pads” for terrorists, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Thursday.
“The recent attacks in Mumbai were a grim reminder of the grave threat posed by extremism and terrorism to our pluralistic and liberal traditions. There are many who would not like to see India succeed,” the prime minister told delegates at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here.
“But we have shown, over and over again, that we will not allow the forces of terrorism and extremism to destabilize us. We have taken several measures to strengthen national security,” he said at the annual conclave during which India seeks to connect with its vast diaspora.
“We will continue to work with the international community to ensure that there are no safe havens and launching pads for terrorists.”
The inaugural session was also addressed by Suriname Vice President Ramdien Sardjooe, the chief guest at the event, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi.
