Gaza : The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), said it was suspending all its activity in the Gaza Strip after one of its employees was killed Thursday.
A driver bringing humanitarian supplies from the northern crossing point of the Gaza Strip into the territory was killed when the aid convoy was fired upon, a spokesman for the UN said.
The incident took place towards the end of Israel’s humanitarian lull, which involved a three-hour cessation of hostilities to allow aid lorries into the enclave and let residents stock up on basic supplies.
Adnan Abu Hasna, from the UNRWA, said the convoy came under Israeli fire near the Erez crossing, killing one driver and injuring another.
The convoy had UN flags and the drivers were wearing UNRWA vests, Abu Hasna said, noting that details were still sketchy and that the agency was gathering more information.
He added that the convoy had coordinated with the Israeli military.
Abu Hasna said the suspension of UN operations was in protest of the attack and lack of access for aid workers in the enclave.
