According to the Cabinet decision the commission will have three members rather than existing two besides the Chairperson. The expansion is aimed at enabling the Commission to deal with the increasing number of matters before it.

Moreover, the Cabinet has also approved amendments to Section 2, Section 3, Section 10 and Section 12B of the NCMEI Act, says Central government press release.

The NCMEI was established through the promulgation of an Ordinance dated 11th November, 2004. The Ordinance was replaced by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Act 2004 (2 of 2005) which was notified on 6th January 2005. The Act provided for constitution of the Commission and the key objective is to ensure that the true amplitude of the educational rights enshrined in Article 30(1) of the Constitution is made available to the members of the notified religious minority communities, says the release.
