London : National selector Geof Miller defended England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) action in the wake of the row that led to the departure of captain Kevin Pietersen and coach Peter Moores.
Pietersen resigned as the England captain after falling out with Moores on several issues that latest being the issue of former skipper Michael Vaughan’s exclusion from the tour of West Indies. Moores has also been sacked by the ECB.
Miller believes that ECB managing director Hugh Morris reacted correctly to the dispute.
“The last 48 hours has been very interesting and it hasn’t been ideal for English cricket. Hugh Morris has put an awful lot of work in the past few days behind the scenes,” Miller was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.
“It has been a non-stop procedure but the ECB have not created the problems in the dressing room and they have had to react accordingly. Certain things have happened and we will now have the chance to move on,” he added.
Miller said that despite being a selector he couldn’t gauge the deep-rooted problems in the dressing room.
“I always look to create harmony in the dressing room. It’s very disappointing. When we made the appointment of Kevin as captain we did it with the thought of two series and the Ashes in the offing,” he said.
Andrew Strauss has been handed the role of Test captain but it remains unclear whether he will captain the one-day side, especially as he has not featured for the ODI team for over a year.
But Miller said that he would sit down with Strauss about the ODI captaincy and admitted there was no standout candidate for the position.
“It’s a difficult decision to make. There is no real obvious case for who should be one-day captain. He (Strauss) has not played for a long time but that’s not to say he’s not capable of playing one-day cricket for England,” said Miller.
