The Australian former foreign minister made the statement in a seminar on “The Middle East and the World: The State of International Security 2009” here on Monday.

Commenting on Indonesian role, Evans said the country would probably provide peace-keeping force, although it was not easy to be accepted.

“I haven`t heard a speculation about it but I think Indonesia can play its positive role in Gaza,” Evans said.

He added that Indonesia had played its active diplomatic role to end Gaza crisis through a dialog between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy, and an active diplomacy with the UN Security Council and other international organizations.

Evans said that a call for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza was necessary because the situation there should not be even worse.

He asserted that to support a cease-fire in Gaza, the factions in Palestine should be united, although it was not easy.

Evans added that the international community should realize that the cease-fire has to be supported by both Fatah and Hamas groups.
