Patna: Human Rights Watch, a US based rights group, in its recent 2009 report has pointed its fingers on the will and capacity of the Indian government to implement laws and policies designed to ensure the protection of rights.
It said “There is a pattern of denial of justice and impunity, whether it is in cases of human rights violations by security forces, or the failure to protect women, children, and marginalized groups such as Dalits, tribal groups, and religious minorities.”
The report points out that India continue to provide extraordinary powers to its troops and grants them immunity from prosecution when they abuse those powers and commit human rights violations. Police continue to arbitrarily round up and detain Muslims nationwide after bomb blasts; many have alleged were tortured during interrogation and forced into signing false confessions.
The report also mentions that “Muslims face discrimination in access to housing and jobs and the Indian government does little to protect them.”
Important to note here is that there is no dearth of human rights commission at State or National level, but they are like toothless tiger that don’t know how to roar at the covert operations of the agencies or the violations by the army.
Despite the repeated attempts by TwoCircles.net, members of National Human Rights Commission were not available for comment.
