New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Thursday informed a city court that it will complete next month the investigations into a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case here, in which former central minister Jagdish Tytler was allegedly involved.
“We have already examined seven witnesses, including US-based Jasbir Singh. We will complete our investigation within next 30 days,” CBI counsel informed Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rakesh Pandit, who slated the next hearing for Feb 28.
The CBI also handed over to the court a status report on its investigation in a sealed cover.
The agency earlier told the court it has recorded California-based witness Jasbir Singh’s statement in a riot case.
Initially the agency had expressed reservations over going to the US to record Jasbir Singh’s statement and had issued notice to him to come to India for deposition. But he pleaded to the Delhi High Court that he feared danger to his life in India, and therefore his statement be recorded in the US.
At one point, the CBI declared Jasbir Singh was non-traceable, but he spoke to media and indicated the agency had made no effort to trace him.
Jasbir Singh, in an affidavit before the Nanavati Commission that probed the anti-Sikh riots here in the aftermath of prime minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination, claimed he had overheard Tytler on Nov 3, 1984, rebuking his men for killing only a few Sikhs in his constituency.
The CBI then had submitted to the court a closure report, giving a clean chit to Tytler, but the court rejected it and asked the agency to further investigate the case.
