“The Tripura and Mizoram police, along with other special police wings of the northeastern states, have been probing to find out the details about the racket,” said Anish Prasad, Tripura’s Dhalai district police chief.

“A team of Mizoram police after arresting Birkumar Debbarma, sub-inspector of Tripura police, have taken him to Aizawl earlier this week for further investigation,” Prasad told IANS.

Last month, Tripura police arrested intelligence wing official Amarchand Chowdhury and one of his associates and recovered fake Indian currency notes worth Rs.50,000.

“Chowdhury was suspended from service and now he is in police custody,” Tripura police spokesman Nepal Das said.

He confessed to police interrogators that the fake notes had been supplied by a Bangladeshi from across the border.

“A number of rackets involving people of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar are active in circulation of fake Indian currencies in the northeastern region,” Das maintained.

Paramilitary Assam Rifles in joint raids with the Mizoram police had seized fake currency worth Rs. 1 million and arrested several people including a local bank manager and Myanmarese citizens in Mizoram during the past two months.

“The police have also recovered some documents and important information of the Central Bank of Bangladesh from them,” a Mizoram police official said.
