Brussels : The European Commission on Saturday welcomed resolutions made during the recent Arab Economic, Development and Social Summit in Kuwait.
The European Union (EU) supports economic and political integration in all world regions, particularly in Arab countries, said Christian Homan, spokeswoman for European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
The experiment of the EU as the largest economic bloc in the world shows that economic integration brings benefits to all countries involved, she said.
During the Kuwait Summit, His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah announced Kuwait’s donation worth USD 500 million for a billion-US-dollar fund for bankrolling Arab development projects.
Kuwait also pledged USD 34 million for covering the UNRWA-urged needs for the Palestinian people.
She added that the European Commission was working with the Arab League for bolstering and promoting bilateral cooperative relations and Euro-Mediterranean free trade.
On the Kuwait Summit’s resolution on Gaza reconstruction, Homan stressed that a priority should be given to the provision of food, water, fuel and medicine to the Gaza Strip.
The commission is also exerting efforts to shore up the Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire and to make Israel reopen all crossing points, she said, calling for inter-Palestinian national reconciliation.
She also voiced the EU’s willingness to join Gaza reconstruction efforts and to revitalize economic activities in the Gaza Strip.
