New Delhi: President of India Pratibha Patil has approved the conferment of Padma Awards-2009. Of all 133 Padma awardees in three categories of the award, 12 are Muslims with Muslim women getting one-third of it.
10 of 12 Muslim awardees will get Padma Shri award while the other two Padma Bhushan award. In all, 93 people will get Padma Shri award while 30 will be awarded with Padma Bhushan. In the top category of Padma awards namely Padma Vibhushan there is no Muslim among 10 recipients.
Two Muslim Padma Bhushan awardees are Shamshad Begum from Maharashtra in the field of Art and Dr Khalid Hameed, NRI/PIO in the field of Medicine.
