Colombo : Sri Lankan troops Sunday entered Mullaitivu town, the last stronghold of the Tamil Tigers, despite heavy resistance, an army official said.
“Troops of the 59 Division entered Mullaitivu town area from the northern end. They are now carrying out operations inside the town area,” Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.
He said guerrillas from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) offered heavy resistance “but our troops successfully entered the town, neutralising the enemy resistance”, Nanayakkara said.
He said there were no civilians in the town, 355 km northeast of Colombo, when the troops entered the town.
