Chandigarh : The police had to fire a few rounds in the air outside a religious place in this city Friday to disperse a violent mob that tried to stop local officials from carrying out an anti-encroachment drive.
A team of officials had gone to the Sector 38-west gurudwara (Sikh shrine) Friday afternoon to remove encroachments from the area.
However, a crowd soon gathered at the shrine to oppose the anti-encroachment drive. They pelted stones at the police and other officials.
Six people, including Chandigarh’s additional deputy commissioner I.S. Sandhu, were injured in the stone-pelting.
The police tried to control the mob but were unable to and had to resort to firing in the air.
Tension continued in the area even Friday evening as the protesters refused to allow the anti-encroachment drive to be carried out.
Police officials said that the person, who was leading the protesters, was arrested.
