PM condoles death of infants in Punjab hospital fire

New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday expressed shock at the death of five infants in a fire in a hospital in Punjab’s Patiala town and has sanctioned compensation of Rs.100,000 each for the families of the victims.

Manmohan Singh, who is recuperating after coronary bypass surgery, has sanctioned Rs.100,000 each for the families of the deceased from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, an official said.

“The prime minister has directed that assistance be provided from his relief fund to the kin of the deceased,” the official said.

The five infants were burnt to death after a fire broke out in the phototherapy ward of the government-run Rajindra Hospital in Patiala early Saturday.

The Punjab government has ordered a judicial probe into the incident.
