“Accused Shahnawaz Khan, who is a resident of Shakarpur area of east Delhi, was arrested from Laxmi Nagar on the basis of secret information,” said a senior police officer.

The arrest came following a number of incidents of robbery and snatching by motorcycle-borne men in various parts of the national capital, mainly east and southeast Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region) areas like Ghaziabad and Noida.

The accused is a resident of Chandni Mahal area in the walled city but was presently residing in Shakarpur.

“A search was conducted in Shakarpur area and finally we located the motorcycle used in the crimes. However, during the search, Khan managed to escape,” the police officer said.

Several raids were conducted across Delhi and finally Khan was arrested on July 5 from near Walia Nursing Home in Shakarpur.

“On interrogation, Khan revealed that he along with his associate Ashiq Ali used to target women travelling in auto-rickshaws or cycle rickshaws. They used to stop these vehicles on some pretext and once the vehicle had stopped, they used to threaten the passengers with weapons and rob them,” said the police officer.

“They also targetted women walking alone on the road. In other instances, they have stopped vehicles, threatened the passengers and extorted money from them.”

“The duo further revealed their involvement in more than 100 cases of robbery and snatching in east Delhi, New Delhi, south-east Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh),” the officer said.
