The blast took place around 2 p.m. in Billi-Markundi village of Sonbhadra district, about 500 km from here, the official said, adding that the news reached the state capital only in the evening, after the injured were rushed to the hospital at the disrtict headquarters.

The condition of two of the injured was described as serious while the rest were stated to be “out of danger”.

Rich in stone and minerals, Sonbhadra is also notorious for illegal mining. While officials could not confirm if the quarry was legal, they admitted that the blast occurred on account of disproportionate use of dynamite.
