Justice Chandrachud while hearing a petition challenging the ban on the book ‘Islam: A concept of Political World Invasion by Muslims’ authored by a city lawyer R V Bhasin, said ‘Terrorists may have been Muslims, but all Muslims are not terrorists,’ says a TOI report.

Justice Chandrachud is a part of the full bench set up for hearing the petition filed by Bhasin against the state government. Other judges on the bench are Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice R S Mohite.

The book which was published in the early part of 2007 was banned by the state government lest it should create communal disharmony. A group of Muslim organizations – Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Islamic Research Foundation, Bombay Aman Committee and the Maharashtra Muslim Lawyers Forum – had approached the state government seeking ban on the book as they said it intended to hold ideology of Islam in contempt and create hatred for Muslims.

Advocate Yusuf Muchchala, appearing on behalf of the organizations said that the book selectively picked and chose verses from the Qur’an out of context and advanced a dubious theory that Islam preached violence and hatred towards non-Muslims. He also quoted some verses from the Holy Qur’an emphasizing on humanity adding that according to Islamic jurisprudence forcible conversion is under all circumstances null and void.

The court has adjourned further hearing of the case to July 24, and asked Yusuf to explain the verses regarding position of women, an allegation made in the book.

However, Bhasin claims that his book “analyses intellectually, the background of world history in context of the effect of Islam over the world and in particular over the social, cultural and political systems in India”.
