Police said the arrests were made late Friday night following a complaint by few students of the first year M.Com. course.

Following a tip-off, a team of policemen in plainclothes reached the hostel and arrested the seniors who allegedly forced a junior student to consume liquor and dance.

Additional Director General of Police A.K. Khan said the eight students were booked under various sections of Anti-Ragging Act.

University authorities have also suspended all the eight students from the university. Vice Chancellor Prabhakar Rao announced the suspension when leaders of various student bodies met him and demanded stern action against the guilty.

Students also staged a protest Saturday outside the police station, demanding that the guilty be punished.

In Hyderabad, Higher Education Minister Sridhar Babu told reporters that he had ordered university authorities to act tough against those indulging in ragging.

He said an inquiry would be conducted into the incident and action would be taken against the vice chancellor if it was found that he failed to deal firmly with the guilty.
