Chinese Police seize 19,000 guns ahead of National Day

Beijing : The Chinese Police have seized 19,000 guns and nearly 500 tonnes of explosives in a crackdown on criminals in the past four months across the country, the public security ministry here said Monday.

More than 5,200 people were arrested in connection with the illegal production and sales of explosives and gun-related crimes since March, the ministry said on its website.

The crackdown is part of a campaign aimed at ensuring law and order in the country ahead of the Chinese National Day celebration Oct 1, Guo Bei, director with the public security ministry, said.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The police also seized nearly 1.47 million detonators, 800,000 bullets and 39,000 imitation (replica) guns, Guo said. Possession of guns as well as manufacturing and sale of imitation guns is forbidden in China.

The police crackdown is also to check trafficking of women and children and will continue through out this year, he added.

Between April 9 and July 6, the police have rescued 829 children and 1,403 women, and busted 335 human trafficking networks in the country. A total of 2,417 people involved in human trafficking were detained, the ministry said.
