Under-trial prisoner escapes from police custody

Kolkata : An under-trial prisoner fled from a state-run hospital here Tuesday in collusion with his girlfriend after offering drug-laced sweets to two police constables guarding him.

Amin Khan, a Presidency Jail inmate accused in six cases including of abduction and dacoity, was being taken back to the jail after a health check-up at the SSKM hospital when he expressed a wish to visit his girlfriend at a place close to the hospital, officials said.

The two guards from the Reserve Force agreed, and the three walked up towards a neighbouring gurdwara where the girl offered the sweets to the policemen who fell unconscious on consuming them.

Finding the two guards incapacitated, Khan and the girl escaped.

The constables have been put under suspension.

Deputy commissioner of city police Javed Shamim said the deputy commissioner (Reserve Force) will probe the circumstances leading to the escape.
