Arresting of rights activists before Hillary’s arrival in Mumbai to be challenged

By Abdul Hameed, TwoCircles.net,

Mumbai: Awami Bharat Sansatha (ABS) will challenge the illegal arresting of three civil rights activists Firoz Mithiborwala, Kishor Jagtap and Aslam Ghazi before the arrival of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Mumbai earlier this week. For several hours they were kept in ‘preventive custody.’

Mithiborwala of ABS told pressmen that their detention for nearly 21 hours without any valid reason was unjustified and undemocratic. He told that they were not let off unless we threatened of hunger strike and gathering of agitators and media increased outside the police station.

‘We will be meeting state Home Minister Jayant Patil to challenge the arrest politically and to challenge it legally we will file a petition in the Bombay High Court,’ said Firoz adding that though they were not told the reason for the arrest, they doubted that it was due to their anti-America campaign.

Kishor Jagtap while talking to TCN told that the procedures to file the petition are on. Advocate Mihir Desai and advocate Gayatri are our counselors. We will lodge writ petition in Bombay HC within this week.’ He added that Rakesh Maria and KP Raghuvanshi had tried to create fear among us but we are not going to stop our campaign against America and Israel. ‘India is a country of Gandhi and Ambedkar and any type of injustice will be unacceptable to us.’

He also said that we did not intend to protest against Hillary yet we were arrested. ‘Before any protest we start SMS campaign and inform common people about it.’
